CALGARY – The largest urban park in Canada is nestled in south Calgary. Spanning more than 1,000 hectares, Fish Creek Provincial Park is tough to capture in a single snapshot, but a new contest is daring photographers to try.

The Friends of Fish Creek Provincial Park Society is holding its first ever photography contest, called Capture Nature.

It’s an opportunity for photographers of all ages and skill levels to look through their lens and share something special.

The idea is to get people to see things or visit areas they normally wouldn’t see.

The society is a non-profit organization that was established in 1992 and became a registered charity two years later. Its mandate is to conserve the park through education and awareness and this is its latest attempt.

The contest runs from July 1 to August 15, but registration is already open.

Each participant can submit up to ten images, across three different themes. The first is action and includes anything that moves, such as water or wildlife.

Water also fits into the next category, as judges look for the best landscape. That could be a tree, a flower, a sunset or whatever fancies your focus.

Getting up close and personal is a must if you want to win the final category, which is Macro.

All pictures must be taken in Fish Creek Park and will be judged by a panel of volunteer jurors based on their technical aspects, originality and composition. Gift cards will go to the top three overall shots and photography gift bags to the best pictures in each theme.

Registration is $15 for youth and $25 for adults. The money raised will go directly towards conservation and stewardship initiatives in the park.
