It has been talked about for years, but today work will finally get underway on a new rapid transit line to connect Coquitlam and Vancouver.
B.C.’s Transportation and Heritage Ministers will make an announcement later today in Port Moody about the next steps in pre-construction.
That will include installing BC Hydro lines, which will be powering the line, in Port Moody and Coquitlam. Some other utility lines will have be either widened or moved, and a CP rail line will have to be relocated.

Global News talked to some early commuters this morning about the future of the Evergreen Line.
“I think it is very important,” says one man. “I’ve just moved here, but having lived in different places around Metro Vancouver, I can see the value in having great transportation. I take the West Coast express to work every day, and it is a huge time saver. So if we want to encourage people to take environmentally sustainable transportation, this is one of the best ways.”
Others say they are excited for construction to begin, but it’s been a long time in the making.
Work is expected to begin later this month. The project is expected to cost 1.4 billion dollars and be operating by the summer of 2016.
The train will connect Coquitlam to Vancouver via Burnaby and Port Moody.
Five new stations will be built along the line, which will begin at the existing Lougheed Town Centre station and end at Douglas College.
