Edmonton police officer charged with aggravated assault

EDMONTON — An Edmonton police officer is charged in the aggravated assault of a man who suffered a complex facial fracture during an encounter in a store.

On March 8, 2014, Const. Sean Briegel responded to a call reporting an intoxicated man causing trouble and refusing to leave a Subway store inside a Mac’s convenience store in Edmonton.

“The officer had contact with the 45-year-old man that resulted in serious injury,” said the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT). “No weapon was involved.”

The man suffered a “significant complex facial fracture requiring hospitalization and surgery.”

Briegel – a four-year member – was arrested, then released with conditions that included having no contact with the man or any witnesses.

ASIRT investigated the incident then shared the file with the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service, which confirmed there were reasonable grounds to believe Briegel committed an offence.

The nature of “the contact” between the police officer and the man will be the focus of any potential trial. ASIRT won’t offer any further comment because the case is before the courts.

The Edmonton Police Service confirmed Briegel had been charged with one count of aggravated assault under Section 268 of the Criminal Code of Canada stemming from an on-duty incident.

The EPS said he has been placed on administrative duties.
