CALGARY – A motorcyclist suffered life-threatening injuries after crashing into a car just before noon on Thursday.

Police said a call came in at 11:57 a.m. when a motorcycle hit a black Mercedes sedan at the intersection of 45 St. S.W. and Bow Trail.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, but police say one of the vehicles may have ran a red light.

“We’ve got several witnesses that were in the area that saw the collision,” said Calgary Police Sgt. Darren Wood. “Once we review their statements, we’ll be able to piece together what actually happened.”

The male motorcyclist, in his early 30s, was taken to Foothills Hospital in serious, potentially life-threatening condition suffering from multiple traumatic injuries, including head and leg injuries, according to EMS.  The female driver of the car has no injuries.

“She’s upset, she’s shaken up, and currently giving us a statement about what happened,” said Wood on Thursday morning.

Bow Trail was closed in both directions just before 1 p.m. but was reopened around 3 p.m.

Traffic officials are investigating, and police are telling drivers to be on the lookout for motorcyclists.

“We’re asking drivers of cars to be aware of them as well,” said Wood. “They can be right on your side without you even seeing them.”
