Woman dies after being stabbed in central Edmonton

WATCH ABOVE: A woman is dead after an early morning assault in central Edmonton. Kent Morrison reports.

EDMONTON — Edmonton police have identified a woman was who fatally stabbed north of the downtown core early Thursday morning as Claudia Mary Iron-Howard. Police say the 29-year-old’s death has been deemed a homicide.

Just before 5 a.m. police were called to 106 Avenue and 103 Street in the Central McDougall neighbourhood, where the woman was found in life-threatening condition after being assaulted. She was treated on scene and taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital, where she died.

An autopsy has since confirmed Iron-Howard died from a stab wound to the chest.

Edmonton police say they are interviewing a number of witnesses, but there is no suspect at this time.

“We have spoken to several witnesses who came upon the victim after the stabbing and we are looking for witnesses who may have seen the victim earlier in the night,” said Staff Sgt. Bill Clark, of the EPS Homicide Section.

This is Edmonton’s ninth homicide of 2015.
