TORONTO – Feeling self-conscious about wearing a dress that clings to the body? A Canadian celebrity stylist says you shouldn’t be.
Toronto-born Leslie Fremar — who counts Oscar winners Julianne Moore, Reese Witherspoon and Charlize Theron among her star clients — wants women to put their fashion fears aside and embrace clothing that contours their figures.
“It’s a misconception that if you’re trying to hide something that you should wear something larger,” Fremar said during a recent interview at Square One Shopping Centre in Mississauga, Ont., west of Toronto, where she curated the SQ1 Concept boutique for Canadian designers.
“I do think that form-fitting clothes do accentuate the beautiful parts of a woman’s body and (they should) embrace that form instead of trying to hide it. So I think like a really slimming, fitted dress is always something that’s good for summer that can take you through September.
“You can always throw a blazer on top of it. And if it’s form-fitting underneath, in the fall you can start layering it and it won’t feel so bulky. So I think it’s also a good investment piece.”
The New York-based stylist said it’s up to women to determine if they want to select a vibrant colour or stick to the basics, but she did offer a few suggestions regarding prints.
“I think simple patterns are better when (they’re) kind of enlarged — when it’s not just your shirt or just your skirt. So when you’re talking about a dress, maybe (choose) something more simple.

“If you’re looking to do something bold, prints are a way to kind of achieve that. But it might not be something that you can wear all of the time — just a one-off piece.”
Since Moore’s recent run of awards show appearances en route to winning the best actress Oscar for “Still Alice,” the actress has walked the red carpet in several form-fitting Givenchy couture gowns.
Moore wore an elegant black beaded creation to the Met Gala. More recently, she donned a sleek velvet, one-sleeved burgundy dress with a leather bodice to the “Mad Max” premiere in Cannes.
Fremar said another Givenchy design worn by Moore to this year’s Golden Globes was one she’d love to wear.
“(Creative director) Riccardo Tisci made her this incredible silver paillette dress that turned into this incredible black feathered train. And I was just like: ‘God, if I could have a dress, that would be mine!’ So I was jealous, for sure,” Fremar said with a laugh.
