The new Lifetime drama UnReal goes behind the scenes of how a reality show is created and produced.

Shiri Appleby, one of its stars, says it’s as close as it gets to an actual reality show.

“As far as I know, yes,” she told ET Canada.

Appleby plays the show’s main character, Rachel – a cutthroat TV producer who handles the production of a pretend dating reality show called Everlasting and aims to attain the maximum amount of drama from contestants.

“I mean, this is really lifting the curtain on what it takes to produce reality TV,” she explained.

Playing the role of ratings-hungry executive producer of Everlasting is Constance Zimmer. “People think they’re seeing the real thing, but it is a manipulated situation,” she said.

Appleby said that UnReal dives into the dark side of reality TV.

“The stuff that goes on, on UnReal, is pretty unreal,” she said. “It’s really outrageous at times, moving and funny, but really kind of dark – the underbelly of what television is capable of.”

UnReal premieres June 1 at 10 p.m.

Lifetime in Canada is part of Shaw Media, parent company of Global News.
