Hungry Goats Invade Wascana

Goats eat invasive plant species in Wascana Park. Matt Myers / Global News

REGINA – Wascana Centre’s habitat conservation area welcomed about 100 hungry goats back for the spring.

The goats are used as an alternative to chemicals when dealing with overgrown plants. The main ones the goats focus on are Canada thistle and the caragana shrub.

Caragana is not native to Saskatchewan and has invaded the growing space of other, more common plants.

This is the third year the goats have been brought into the area.

The goal was for the goats to eat one hectare of caragana.

The project is two-thirds complete and this may be the last year the goats are needed.

The public can try and view the goats from the top of Wascana hill.

For families wanting to get a closer look, the area will be open to the public on May 30th as a part of the Wings Over Wascana nature festival.
