Fentanyl is a highly addictive and deadly opioid which has been linked to a number of overdoses throughout the province.

“Its presence around children causes particular concern,” said police in a news release.

A search of the vehicle uncovered 27 fentanyl pills and a small amount of crack cocaine.

The women, aged 25 and 26, are facing drug trafficking charges in addition to charges under Alberta’s Drug-endangered Children’s Act.

The Drug-endangered Children’s Act makes it clear that children exposed to an adult’s involvement in serious drug activity, such as manufacturing and trafficking, are victims of abuse and need protection.

As such, Child and Family Services was notified – and the child was placed in the care of a family member.

Police say the women won’t be named in order to protect the identity of the child.
