TORONTO – Mike O’Brien, a longtime CBC writer and an actor who played a recurring character on Corner Gas, has died of cancer.
His agent Lisa Marie Schwartz says the 51-year-old died on Sunday night at his home in Winnipeg.
Friends say O’Brien, who played liquor store owner and insurance salesman Wes Humboldt on CTV’s popular sitcom, will be remembered for his ability to find humour in nearly every facet of life.

They say this was most evident in his popular blog, which wryly and wittily chronicled his years-long struggle with cancer.

In addition to his turn on Corner Gas, O’Brien also spent 15 years as a newspaper reporter, 11 years as a writer for CBC Radio and had a role on the HBO Canada comedy series Less than Kind.
He is survived by his wife Robin and their four-year-old son.
