Government providing relief up to $300,000 per person in Cache Creek floods

WATCH: The town of Cache Creek is cleaning up from a disaster on a scale even long-time residents have never seen.. Jeremy Hunka has the latest.

The provincial government has announced that Disaster Financial Assistance is available to people who suffered damages in the flooding in and around Cache Creek last weekend.

“We are very motivated and want to help people in Cache Creek, so that’s what the disaster financial assistance is for,” said Attorney-General Suzanne Anton at the legislature today.

“People will be able to apply to for that coverage for some of their losses.”

Through the Emergency Management BC website, anyone impacted by the flooding can apply for up to $300,000 worth of coverage for losses not covered by their insurance. Funding will be granted for each accepted claim at 80 per cent of the total amount.

Anton didn’t have a set timeline for when people would receive the funds, or the total it would cost the government, but reiterated their desire to provide support.

“People will be need to apply to the program, they need to quantify their damages, it may take a little while, but certainly we’re very motivated to want to help people in Cache Creek,” she said.

The Village of Cache Creek has also set up a fundraising account so you can donate to help.

Anton added that Premier Christy Clark would be visiting the town today.

Cache Creek Mayor John Ranta said few people in town have flood insurance. Around 40 people in the town of 1,000 are under evacuation order, while another 80 are under evacuation alert.

The following areas were added to the evacuation order Monday:

  • 1302 and 1305 Stanley Park Drive; and
  • 1495 Stage Road.

The following areas continue to remain under evacuation order:

  • 1395, 1303, 1301 and 1291 Trans-Canada Highway East;
  • 1505 Stage Road; and
  • 1055 Old Cariboo Road (Riverside Mobile Home Park).
