TORONTO — A shooting Sunday that sent a 13-year-old boy to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries has turned out to not be what it seemed.

Toronto police were called to the city’s north end Sunday afternoon after a teen had been shot in the leg. At the time, police were led to believe he had been shot by an unknown gunman.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

On Monday police announced the boy had in fact accidentally shot himself after being given the gun by a 17-year-old.

Police said the two were in an apartment on San Romano Way near Jane Street and Finch Avenue when the 13-year-old was given the gun. He accidentally shot himself, then was helped out of the apartment by the older teen and taken to the area of Driftwood Avenue and Wilmont Drive. The 17-year-old then told the 13-year-old to tell police he’d been shot while in that location.
