VANCOUVER – Coquitlam RCMP are searching for a person who shot at an SUV outside the Coquitlam Centre Mall.

Calls came in to RCMP at about 3 p.m. on Friday, saying one person had been shot near the Montana’s Restaurant.

The gunfire erupted just metres away from a fundraiser being run by the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Shelley Lycan, the foundation’s special events co-ordinator, says she heard about six popping noises.

“We were just standing here, carrying on with our fundraiser, and we heard gunshots,” she said.

The SUV was hit over 10 times, but the driver was only hit on the shoulder, and has non-life threatening injuries. The passenger, a woman, was grazed and got out of the vehicle to ask for assistance.

“The girlfriend jumped out of the truck and was obviously panicking, freaking out,” recalls Lycan. “She said, ‘does anyone have a Band-Aid?’”

Lycan said they were told the shooter was in a grey BMW. A suspect is still at large but no description is available at this time.

If you have witnessed the shooting, you’re asked to call Coquitlam RCMP.
