Fitness for trial next step in case of Alberta woman accused of stabbing mother

RED DEER – A psychiatric assessment has been ordered for a woman accused of stabbing a nurse at the hospital in Red Deer earlier this year.

The assessment ordered by a judge on Wednesday will determine whether Meghan Claire Dion is fit to stand trial on charges of attempted murder and assault.

The 34-year-old was arrested after a woman identified by authorities as Dion’s mother was allegedly attacked on March 6.

Police have said a suspect was taken into custody the following Sunday in a vehicle that had allegedly been stolen.

The nurse was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Dion will return to court June 24.
