Suspect and RCMP officer identified in rural Manitoba shooting incident

WINNIPEG – A Kemnay, Man., man has been arrested and charged with two counts of attempted murder after an RCMP officer was shot on Friday evening.

Clayton Ewert, 48, is also charged with two counts of uttering threats to kill, two counts of assault, discharging a firearm with intent and using a firearm while attempting to commit murder.

A West Traffic Services RCMP officer was shot at a Kemnay home at about 6:30 p.m. Police had been called to the home to investigate a complaint of an assault.

When police arrived at the home, Ewert threatened them and then fired a firearm, hitting one officer, police allege. The officer, identified by RCMP sources as Cpl. Mark Hume, was treated at a hospital but has since been released and is expected to make a full recovery.

Ewert is being held in custody and is scheduled to appear in Brandon court on Tuesday.

The RCMP major crime unit continues to investigate.

Kemnay is on the Trans-Canada Highway about 15 kilometres west of Brandon, Man., and 215 kilometres west of Winnipeg.
