WINNIPEG – An RCMP officer is recovering after suffering a gunshot wound Friday night near Brandon, Manitoba.

At around 6:30 p.m. officers responded to a call in Kemnay, about 15 kilometers west of Brandon to what neighbours said they think was a domestic dispute.

“Sounded like a shot gun and dust coming out of the tree so obviously it hit something and then I saw them running,” said Stephen Stadnyk who watched the entire incident unfold from his porch. “This is a small little community and for something like that to happen now, this usually happens in a city.”

Stadnyk said about 10 more RCMP cars rushed in after the shots were fired.

Then officers came and told him and his family to go inside their trailer, where they waited for close to two hours.

“About 40 minutes later that’s when he came out with his hands up and… they arrested him over there,” said Stadnyk.

Neighbours said this isn’t the first time police have been called to the address. Last summer, officers were also seen outside the home.

“I think they’re common law, there was a dispute last year that we saw caused the cops to be here… she was moving out,” said Stadnyk. “I heard by word that she needed the cops there so she could leave.”

And Stadnyk said others living nearby thought of the same suspect when they heard about the standoff.

“A lady came with a vehicle and we said oh, there’s a shootout and then she said oh, its gotta be Clayton, so I think people knew already,” said Stadnyk.

The injury was non-life threatening, the officer has since been released from hospital and “will be fine” according to the RCMP.

One person is in custody and RCMP officers are continuing to investigate what happened along with the Forensic Identification Section.
