Saskatchewan set to spend ‘record’ amount on road construction this year

REGINA – Work on the Regina Bypass and 300 kilometres worth of repaving on the province’s busiest highways are among the projects listed for the 2015-2016 road construction season in Saskatchewan.

Highways and Infrastructure Minister Nancy Heppner says in a release that a record $842 million has been set aside for this year’s construction budget – a 27 per cent increase from last year.

Of that, $560 million is allocated for major capital projects, including highway twinning, passing lanes and overpasses.

Plans also call for 150 kilometres of rural highway upgrades, along with 41 bridge and culvert projects.

The government says a weekly construction update will be published during the spring and summer months to provide the travelling public with the latest construction information.

It’s also reminding drivers that they will face three times the normal fines for driving faster than 60 kilometres an hour in work zones.
