Two Saskatchewan Huskies on CFL radar ahead of 2015 draft

Watch above: Two Saskatchewan Huskies are on the radar as CFL teams prepare for the 2015 draft. Kim Thue looks at where the pair might go in next week’s draft.

SASKATOON – A year after having no players selected in the CFL draft, a pair of Saskatchewan Huskies could have their names called next week. According to Huskies head coach Brian Towriss, defensive tackle Timi Agbaje and linebacker Geoffrey Hughes are both on the radar of teams across the league.

“I know there is some interest in both of them,” says Towriss.

“I don’t think either one of them are going to go in the first couple rounds, but I do think there is a chance both of them are going to be taken.”

The six-foot three, 260 pound Agbaje is a physically imposing figure, who is very athletic for his size. That allows the defensive lineman to dominate inside at the CIS level.

The Edmonton product is hoping he soon gets a crack at causing havoc on the line in the CFL.

“Hopefully get drafted,” Agbaje says of his expectations for Tuesday. “If not, end up at a camp. It would be great to get drafted, but if not, we’ll see how things go and I’ll be back here in the fall.”

The draft expectations for Hughes aren’t quite the same as his teammates.

“I don’t really expect anything,” says a hesitant Hughes.

The reason for Hughes lack of enthusiasm? The linebacker has already informed teams he will be returning to the University of Saskatchewan (U of S) next season to finish his chemical engineering degree.

“I’ve disclosed to the teams that I have talked to that I will be coming back (to the U of S) next year no matter what,” admits Hughes. “They have told me it hurts my (draft) stock but I’d rather be honest with them and not have any surprises.”

Levi Steinhauer and Charlie Power were the last two Huskies to be drafted, back in 2013. After a year of not being represented at the CFL draft, a couple of Huskies could have their names called on May 12.
