FORT MCMURRAY — The Penticton Vees defeated the Portage Terriers 4-3 in the Western Canada Cup Championship game in Fort McMurray on Saturday.
With 12 minutes and 59 seconds remaining in the first, Riley Alferd put the Vees on the scoreboard getting the first goal of the game.
Then Taylor Friesen tied the game for the Terriers on a rebound with 6 minutes and 19 seconds remaining in the first.
The Vees got their lead back in the second with 14 minutes and 43 seconds remaining, Dante Fabbro scored his second of the tournament.
Then, Steen Cooper, with 4 minutes and 25 seconds left in the second period, scored his second of the tournament on the powerplay and the Vees had a 3-1 lead.
However, just seconds after the Cooper goal, Tyler Jeanson banged home a slot shot and the Terriers responded quickly to make the score 3-2.
Zach Waldvogel scored from in front and with 56 seconds to go in the third period, Portage tied the game on the powerplay.
The game went into overtime and Connor Chartier banged home a rebound off a Conroy shot and the Vees won the 2015 Western Canada Cup Championships with a 4-3 win Saturday night.
