Okanagan youth can ‘Go Fish’ without a license

Regional District of Central Okanagan

More fish are being added to special central Okanagan fishing areas just in time for the “Go Fish” program for local youth.

Central Okanagan Regional District spokesperson Bruce Smith says over the past eight years, more than 34,000 young rainbow trout have been stocked in two fishing areas for the annual program.

“The B.C. Freshwater Fisheries Society and Summerland Trout Hatchery staff are adding 2,500 more 25 to 30 centimetre long fish into the special fishing areas,” says Smith.

Every weekend until June 14, youth 15-years-old and under will be able to fish for rainbow trout between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. without needing a license. They are also allowed to keep one each day.

“For some youngsters the ‘Go Fish’ program may be their first opportunity to experience the lifelong enjoyment of fishing,” says Smith. “This program is one of the best we offer each year.”

He says the grand opening will be this Saturday at the Hall Road pond in Mission Creek Regional Park. Activities will resume at a special fishing area set up in Shannon Lake Regional Mark on Sunday.

“Regional Parks staff and volunteers from participating organizations will provide a barbeque and refreshments by donation at each kick-off event,” says Smith.

Smith says thousands of central Okanagan youth have taken part in the program.
