Bradley Cooper, Helen Mirren among Tony Awards nominees

TORONTO — Bradley Cooper and Helen Mirren are among the nominees announced Tuesday for the 2015 Tony Awards, which recognize the best of Broadway.

Bruce Willis and Mary-Louise Parker revealed the nominations from New York City’s Paramount Hotel.

Cooper, who earned a nod as best lead actor in a play for his work in The Elephant Man, is up against Steven Boyer (Hand to God), Ben Mees (Wolf Hall), Bill Nighy (Skylight) and Alex Sharp (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time).

It is the first Tony nomination for Cooper, who earned an Oscar nod this year for his role in American Sniper.

Mirren is up for best lead actress in a play against Geneva Carr (Hand to God), Elisabeth Moss (The Heidi Chronicles), Carey Mulligan (Skylight) and Ruth Wilson (Constellations).

In the musical categories, Michael Cerveris (Fun Home), Robert Fairchild (An American in Paris), Brian d’Arcy James (Something Rotten!), Ken Watanabe (The King and I) and Tony Yazbeck (On the Town) are up for best leading actor; Kristin Chenoweth (On the Twentieth Century), Leanne Cope (An American in Paris), Beth Malone (Fun Home), Kelli O’Hara (The King and I) and Chita Rivera (The Visit) are up for best leading actress.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Disgraced, Hand to God and Wolf Hall Parts One & Two will compete for Best Play.

Best Musical nominees are An American in Paris, Fun Home, Something Rotten! and The Visit.

Nominees for Best Revival of a Play are The Elephant Man, This Is Our Youth, Skylight and You Can’t Take it With You while musical revivals vying for the Tony are The King and I, On the Twentieth Century and On the Town.

Sting earned a nomination for writing the score for The Last Ship.

Special Tony Awards will be presented to Hedwig and the Angry Inch co-creator John Cameron Mitchell and to Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz. Tommy Tune will be honoured with a Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre award.

The 69th Tony Awards, broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall in New York City on June 7, will be hosted by Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth.
