CALGARY – Final arguments began Monday and wrapped up Tuesday in the first-degree murder trial of Spencer Jordan and Marie Magoon, the Calgary couple accused of killing six-year-old Meika Jordan in Nov. 2011. The judge reserved her decision late Tuesday; the verdict is set to be delivered June 3.

Jordan and Magoon—Meika’s father and stepmother—are accused of torturing, confining and killing Meika—badly burning her with a lighter and unlawfully confining her for several days afterwards until her death.

Crown lawyers say the couple acted together in the abuse that ultimately killed the young girl, but Magoon’s defence is asking for his client’s acquittal.

Lawyer Allan Fay told court Monday he admits his client committed some minor abuse including burning, finger-bending and spanking, but claims she did nothing to cause the fatal head and abdominal injuries. Fay said Magoon embellished confessions to an undercover officer because she thought he was going to help her and Jordan evade arrest.

Jordan’s defence lawyer, Mitch Stephensen, said Tuesday that while Jordan admits to pushing Meika the night before her death, he did not cause any of the injuries that killed her.

Stephensen also said Jordan should not be found guilty of first-degree murder because he tried to revive Meika after she lost consciousness.

The Crown argued his actions were too little too late, and maintained Jordan and Magoon knew their abuse of Meika was likely to cause her death.
