TORONTO — A community is in mourning following the tragic death of three-year-old Wallace Passos, who fell to his death from the 17th floor of an apartment building Sunday.

The family’s west-end apartment was full of people celebrating the boy’s sister’s birthday when he fell through an open window.

“He was running,” said Jessica Lopes, a friend of the family who was at Sunday’s birthday party. “He was really energetic, he was really funny. I’m going to miss him a lot.”

Lopes said the boy fell out a living room window. She said with so many peple in the apartment it got very hot, and the air conditioning was not on yet. The screen on the window was ripped.

Lopes didn’t see him fall out the window; it wasn’t until people noticed the boy had not been seen in a while they made the terrible discovery.

“We were like, ‘where’s Wallace?'” she said, breaking down into tears. “Everyone got up and saw him down there.”

Wallace’s dad went running downstairs.

“I don’t know how he fell, and now he’s gone,” Lopes said as she began to cry. “I just want him back.”

A funeral is being planned.

“God has him in his hands,” said Lopes. “I just want him to hug me one last time.”

Paramedics responded to the apartment, on Hickory Tree Road near Weston Road and Lawrence Avenue, Sunday afternoon. Emergency crews rushed the boy to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police are investigating, though it is not believed to be suspicious.
