Saskatoon police crime task force making dent

SASKATOON – A Saskatoon police task force dealing with vehicle thefts and break and enters appears to be paying off. Between March 23 and April 19, 48 people were arrested, 27 for vehicle thefts and 21 for break and enters.

During that 30-day period, there were 95 vehicles reported stolen and 145 break and enters according to police crime statistics. Last year, there were 106 stolen vehicles and 163 break and enters reported during the same time period.

“The Saskatoon police recognizes there is a growing concern about break and enters, and stolen autos in Saskatoon,” says Insp. Brian Shalovelo from the east division.

“Thanks to our officers hard work, 48 individuals are facing charges relating to break and enters, and theft of motor vehicles.”

So far this year, there have been 327 vehicle thefts and 545 break and enters reported to police.

Police say the majority of vehicle thefts occur when the vehicle is left unlocked with the keys left inside.

The task force was set up last May, with members from all three police divisions, the break and enter unit and the stolen auto unit meeting regularly to analyze numbers and to develop strategies.
