EDMONTON — Duchess Bake Shop has been serving delicious baked goods to customers for the past six years in Edmonton. It’s not unusual to see customers lining up out the front door of the bakery.
The Edmonton bakery has cracked the BuzzFeed list of 23 Bakeries Around The World You Need To Eat At Before You Die. Duchess Bake Shop is fourth on the list and is the only Canadian establishment on it.
“We love what we do, so it’s gratifying and humbling to know so many people think highly of us. We are flattered to be on a list of exquisite bakeries we admire,” said Giselle Courteau, co-owner of Duchess Bake Shop.
The post was submitted by Kendra Thompson through Facebook. The submission reads: “Arguably the best bakery in Canada, the Duchess has a philosophy of using ‘no mixes, no preservatives, and no shortcuts.’ An equal opportunity baker, they have both a duke and a duchess cake.”
Courteau’s credits the bakery’s success to its customers and staff.
“They arrive at 4 a.m. to make each of our 65 pastries from scratch, every day, from the best ingredients from around the world.”
Duchess first opened in October 2009 at its current location on 107 Avenue and 124 Street. The owners are working on a new project that will include a teaching kitchen and a larger retail space for Provision, although the plan hasn’t been finalized.
