Suspect in the shooting of Kamloops RCMP officer in court

The man accused of shooting an RCMP Constable is expected to appear in a Kamloops courtroom this morning for a bail hearing.

Thirty-six-year-old Kenneth Michael Knutson was arrested following a massive manhunt late last year.

He is facing a number of charges, including attempted murder.

He allegedly shot and critically wounded Corporal Jean Rene Michaud during a traffic stop in early December. Michaud underwent several surgeries, but is expected to make a full recovery.

Knutson remains in custody at Kamloops regional correctional centre.

He has an extensive criminal past, including a lifetime firearms ban and a second-degree murder charge. The second-degree murder charge was in 2002, in connection to the death of 21-year-old Christopher Lesniak in Coquitlam.

However, the charge was later downgraded to manslaughter after Knutson pleaded guilty to criminal negligence causing death.

In 2009, he was convicted of three firearms charges after being found by Surrey RCMP wearing body armour and carrying a number of restricted firearms and marijuana.

He was sentenced to two years in jail and given a lifetime firearms ban, and hadn’t had a criminal charge since.
