Tuesday evening marks the eighth and last day of Hanukkah.
Jewish people honour the event by lighting the candles on the menorah – one candle for each day of Hanukkah. It celebrates a miracle that happened almost 2,000 years ago when a temple lamp ran out of oil.

“They had only enough oil to burn for one day and it took eight days to create more holy oil for that light. The miracle was they had the discussion, what do we do, and in the end the answer was well, you have to have faith. So they lit the light and the miracle was it burned for eight days even though it was only one day’s worth of oil,” said Rabbi Jeremy Parnes.
Hanukkah is normally celebrated at home with gifts, games and traditional food such as latkes.
