World Autism Day marked in Lethbridge

Lethbridge – Friday April 2, marks a day to celebrate and share stories of those affected by autism. World Autism Awareness Day was created by the United Nations in 2007 as a day to bring the attention and awareness to the disorder. Autism spectrum disorder is one of only three health issues recognized by the international body with its own day.
The Chinook Autism Society educated southern Albertan’s by gathering in local parks and distributing packages filled with bubbles and sidewalk chalk and provided fact sheets about autism. The society says it’s a starting point for people to engage and learn more about a disability that impacts many families in the community.
“Quite often people focus on the statistics and raising money for charities. Locally we would like to get out as families and share our kids with the community,” says Kareena Zanolli, the president of the Chinook Austism Society.
The event was held at Henderson Park and members of the society are encouraging parents to tweet photos of kids playing with the items to @chinookautism using the hashtags #playtogether and #autismawareness
