TORONTO – Apple is offering an incentive for people to switch to iPhone.

The company has extended its in-store trade-in program – which allows users to trade in old devices under its recycling program – to Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry devices, the company confirmed to Global News Tuesday.

This means Canadian customers who bring in their old devices will get in-store credit to put towards the purchase of a new iPhone.

Apple launched its iPhone trade-in program in 2013 – however the service did not come to the company’s Canadian retail stores until 2014. Customers bring their phone in to a store, get an on-the-spot evaluation of its value, and receive store credit.

An Apple spokesperson would not offer any additional details about how competitor devices would be evaluated or what kind of credit people can expect to receive.

The company said those interested can visit a local Apple retail store for details.

Currently, Canadian consumers can trade in old handsets at an Apple store and receive a gift card up to $275 (depending on the condition of the old iPhone) toward a new model.

Recycled Apple devices are taken apart and components that can be used again are removed. Materials like glass, metal and plastic are reprocessed for use in new products.

BlackBerry pulled a similar move back in November. The Waterloo, Ont.-based smartphone maker announced it was launching a trade-in program to lure iPhone users. Those who have an iPhone 4S, 5, 5C, 5S, and 6 can get up to $400 of trade-in value, and an additional $200 top up, if they switch to the keyboard-equipped BlackBerry Passport.
