TORONTO — Halifax-based production company DHX Media and Ontario’s TVO are partnering on an animated series based on books by theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking and his daughter Lucy Hawking.

The series, aimed at school-aged children, will focus on kids George Greenby and Annie Bellis and their tutor Cosmos — an artificial intelligence app that transports them around the universe — as they learn about science, technology, engineering and math.

“We are delighted to be working with DHX and TVO to bring the wonder and joy of discovering the universe to kids through storytelling and animation,” the Hawkings said in a statement.

“It is very exciting to see our George book series transform into a visual medium, and we are thrilled about the potential to educate through entertainment.”

Stephen Hawking and Lucy Hawking have published four George Greenby books since 2007, including the latest, George and the Unbreakable Code.

The TV series will consist of 39 half-hour episodes. Production will take place in Vancouver.

UK-based Pure Grass Films helped finance the project and will distribute it to markets outside Canada.

Last year, Vancouver’s Nerd Corps Entertainment announced it was developing a 26-episode animated series based on the Hawkings’ books. Shortly after, Nerd Corps Entertainment was acquired by DHX Media.
