Tag Heuer teams up with Google, Intel to make an Apple Watch competitor

TORONTO – Luxury watch company TAG Heuer has teamed with tech giants Google and Intel to produce an Android-powered smartwatch.

The smartwatch will operate using Google’s Android Wear software and will be powered by an Intel chip. According to Reuters, the watch may resemble the Swiss watch designer’s orginial Heuer black Carrera Watch.

More and more fashion brands have been jumping on the smartwatch trend.

Clothing brand Guess announced in January it would partner with Martian Watches to make a line of fashionable smartwatches. From a distance, the Guess Connect watch looks like the brand’s most popular watch design, Rigor.

Even tech brands have designed their smartwatch gadgets to look like traditional watches.

Motorola’s Moto 360 watch, for example, features a traditional round face and allows users to customize their wristbands.

Apple has made a big effort for people to see Apple Watch as a fashionable option – even going as far as to place an 11-page ad spread in U.S. Vogue’s March edition.

The company has also tried to appeal to the wealthy with the Apple Watch Edition – made from 18 karat gold – which will retail starting at US$10,000 (CAD$13,000).

Tag Heuer’s smartwatch is expected to be released before the end of the year – however, no exact release date has been set.

The company did not reveal any technical details about the gadget.
