Saskatchewan government tables new legislation, includes changes to school year

REGINA – When Saskatchewan children head to school in September 2012, they’ll do so after the Labour Day long weekend.

Education Minister Donna Harpauer (HAR’-power) has introduced promised legislation to change the start of the school year.

Harpauer says boards of education will still set the general schedule for the school year.

That was just one of three pieces of new legislation tabled in the assembly.

The government also introduced the Advocate for Children and Youth Act as well as the Ombudsman Act to give those independent officers of the legislature more slightly more power.

Changes are also coming to the Occupational Health and Safety Act to increase fines and penalties for violations.
