TORONTO – A Colorado woman says a man masquerading as an IRS agent had a sudden change of heart once she told him she was pregnant – and revealed he was trying to scam her.
Broomfield, Colorado resident Sarah Carr says she got a voicemail this past Tuesday evening from a man who said he was with the IRS.
“I called it back. The voicemail was saying there was a lien on my property. I was being convicted of tax fraud,” Carr told 9NEWS in Denver, Colorado.
According to Carr, the man seemed to know every detail of her personal and business life. Panicked, Carr sobbingly told the man she was nine months pregnant.
“I’m supposed to have a baby in three weeks. I don’t know what I’m going to do,” Carr said.
That’s when the “IRS Agent” had a sudden change of heart – and revealed he was actually trying to run a phone scam on Carr.
“And then he says, ‘wait, wait, wait, wait, you’re pregnant?’ And I said, ‘yes!’ And he goes ‘I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry, this is a scam,’” Carr said.
Having just outed himself as a would-be criminal, Carr says the faux-tax collector began to console her.
“You’re okay. We’re scamming you. We were just trying to get money out of you. Please stop crying,” Carr says the man told her.
Carr says she’s thankful the man had a last-minute attack of conscience, but is left worried by just how much personal information of hers he had.
