TORONTO- Four years ago two Toronto Paramedics became heroes to a local family after saving their daughter’s life.
Crystal and Jessica got married five years ago and adopted Lily Trumper-Elliott. Lily was born with a heart condition common for kids with down syndrome. She had her first surgery at seven days old and her second at five months.
“She went through the recovery of the surgery and everything went really, really well. We had a couple of hiccups, but we eventually got home,” Crystal Trumper, Lily’s mom, said.
But five days later, Lily went into sudden cardiac arrest.
“We got a call for a baby in cardiac arrest. We got into the vehicle and we responded right away,” Byan Colton, a Level Two Paramedic, said.

Luckily, Crystal did not live too far away and the paramedics were able to get there in a matter of minutes.
“They just ran in, grabbed Lily from the two of us and ran right back out to the ambulance,” Trumper said.
“We started CPR, we started compressions, we also started to ventilate Lily,” said Angelo Di Lisi, one of the attending paramedics.
Crystal was terrified that they had lost Lily, but the paramedics continued to work feverishly on her.
“We…had a police officer drive us to the hospital so we could both work on Lily, and when we got to the hospital, we had gotten a pulse back” Colton said.
Three months ago Crystal sent an email to the Toronto Paramedic Services, hoping to thank the paramedics who saved her daughter in person.
“I couldn’t go any longer knowing that we hadn’t said, thank you properly, that I hadn’t told them just how much they meant to us,” Crystal said.
Just months ago Crystal, Jessica and Lily were reunited with the paramedics, and spent an amazing morning together.
“It was touching to have them say thank you …to be able to see Lily and hold her and sit with her, and play with her for a few hours, it was really touching,” Di Lisi said.
