Students at Greenfield School in south Edmonton found what they thought were fireworks and alerted staff who then called a nearby fire department.

Firefighters picked up the device and took it back to the fire hall. They called police who thought the item seemed suspicious.

The schools were put on “hold and secure” mode while police secured the scene and determined if there was a threat. “Hold and secure” protocol means classes continue normally inside the school, but the school building is locked and contained.

Students were allowed to leave school at the end of the day.
