WINNIPEG – If you are itching to fire up the barbecue this weekend be prepared to pay more if steak is on the menu.
“Beef steaks are up a $1.50 a pound already and they could go higher once the summertime comes and i am pretty sure they will,” said Gilbert Kohlman, the meat manager at Cantor’s Meats.

Kohlman says beef prices have been on the rise for awhile because of supply and demand as well as the low Canadian dollar.
“A lot of the people on the other side of the counter ask the question why is beef so high,” said Kohlman, who suggests shoppers only buy the size of steak they know they will eat and not be tempted to buy a larger cut if it won’t all be eaten.
He said there are still options for meat if people don’t want to spend a lot.
“Pork prices have really dropped a lot in the last two months,” said Kohlman, who added that chicken is still considered affordable.
Economic forecasts peg meat prices to jump three and five percent over the course of 2015.
