EDMONTON — The above-average temperatures in Edmonton over the past several days are proving to be good news for area golfers.

The driving range at the Mill Woods Golf Course opened at noon Friday.

“A lot of smiling faces coming through the door,” Bruce Hardy, a golf pro at the golf course said early Friday afternoon. “It’s been busy already. This would be great if this could just stay like this for a while.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

When golfer Arlin Grohn learned the driving range was open it didn’t take him long to grab his clubs to go hit a bucket of balls.

“(I’m) very excited. Last year was such a long winter and to come out this early in the season is fantastic.”

Hardy has worked at the course for eight years and says this is the earliest he’s seen the driving range open.

Weather permitting, the course plans to keep the driving range open daily from 10 a.m. until dark. Hardy expects staff will have a fairly busy weekend, with temperatures expected to reach 14°C on Saturday.

“It’s going to be exciting,” he said. “I think it’ll be pretty packed tomorrow because it’s supposed to be nice warm weather and guys are itching to get out. And the ladies, as well.”

At this point it’s not known when the full golf course will open.
