Montreal police nab man wanted by FBI for armed robberies

MONTREAL – Montreal police arrested a 51-year-old American man on Sunday who the FBI calls armed and dangerous.

James Whittlesey was wanted in connection with a series of crimes, including robbing a bank in Virginia last October and shooting at police who responded to the robbery. No officers were injured in the incident.

Whittlesey was also sought in connection with four armed robberies in Pennsylvania and Delaware.

He was arrested on a downtown Montreal street corner early Sunday morning.

The arrest was made with the help of information provided by the FBI, RCMP and the Canada Border Services Agency.

Jacqueline Roby of the CBSA said Whittlesey could be extradited to the United States in the coming days.

He was being held in a Montreal area detention centre on Sunday, Roby said.

“We don’t know yet how many days this could take,” she said, adding that Whittlesey will have a hearing if he is detained for 48 hours.

“We have to look at this with our American counterparts.”

Officials wouldn’t give information about where he lived and how long he had been in Montreal.
