REGINA – Orphan Black star Tatiana Maslany says she’s blown away by plans to have a street named after her in Regina.

The versatile actress says it’s “overwhelming” and “bizarre” to be recognized by her hometown, but also “a huge honour.”

The city of Regina has said it plans to include her name in a new neighbourhood development.

Maslany was born and raised in Regina and graduated from high school there in 2003.

She currently stars in the series Orphan Black, in which she plays a slew of disparate, cloned characters.

“It’s kind of overwhelming, it’s bizarre to me that that’s happening but it’s kind of a nice,” Maslany says of Regina’s plans.

“I mean, it’s my city and I love it so much and it’s a huge honour to be recognized by the city in that way…. There’s not a lot of Maslanys out there so it’s kind of nice to have something for us, for my grandfather and for my dad.”

Maslany said Tuesday that her parents still live in Regina and were similarly humbled by the gesture.

“Nothing’s too far from anything (there) so I think it’s probably within a stone’s throw from my family’s house,” she quipped.

Wrapping the third season does not offer much of a break for the in-demand Maslany, who claimed a best actress trophy at the Canadian Screen Awards earlier this month.

Maslany can next be seen in the Helen Mirren feature Woman in Gold, opening April 3. Maslany portrays a younger version of Mirren, who plays a Jewish refugee intent on retrieving family possessions seized by the Nazis.

And on Friday, she heads to her next project: Kim Nguyen’s dramatic feature Two Lovers and a Bear, co-starring Dane DeHaan.

She says the six-week shoot with the Oscar-nominated Canadian director will take her to Nunavut.

After that, Maslany says she’s looking forward to a well-earned break.

“I’m trying to just take some time after that to just sort of re-calibrate and breathe and sleep and just be a human being.”
