Final Thoughts: Holly Alexandruk’s Journey on the Poverty Pledge

Day #5 Breakfast for Winnipeg Harvest's poverty pledge . Holly Alexandruk / Global News

Winnipeg – It’s Friday dinner time, the #povertypledge is nearly over.  This journey has been an interesting one, one that I believe everyone should take on at some point in life.

It wasn’t as easy as I thought.  I believed it would be no problem.  I like beans, lentils, peanut butter and toast.  What’s wrong with some eggs fro breakfast?  After five days of eating the same food, every meal, I realize its not just about getting the proper nutrition, its about enjoying the food we have.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Several people reached out to me during this pledge, one woman described the meat aisle to me, and I love the example. “Looking at the meat is like passing by a jewelry store, the diamonds are beautiful to look at, but impossible to have.”

I have been asked several times what I want to eat first.  For me?  It’s the healthy food.  Crisp cucumber, peppers, lettuce, kale, strawberries, blueberries etc.

After eating canned foods for five days, I appreciate so much more heading to my kitchen and being able to open the fridge and grabbing a piece of fruit or vegetables to make the salad.

All in all, it was a great experience, one I recommend others to take on.
