CALGARY – A Calgary woman says the suns reflection off her neighbour’s windows is melting the siding on her home.
Arlene Choquette moved into her new home two years ago but this past summer she noticed the siding in one small area of her wall was warping.
The home builder inspected the area and says the heat from the sunlight bouncing off the neighbouring window is to blame for the damage.
Chris Cossins with Cossins Windows says it’s a rare occurrence but it does happen.

“If the angle of the house and the angle of the sun is just exactly right, you’ll get reflection off the outside of the sealed unit going across and hitting the other house and causing a heat to build up.”
Cossins says the coating on low e glass on the window is reflecting ultraviolet light.
Choquettes insurance company will not cover the damage and her home warranty has expired. While she has little options left she wants to make sure the same thing doesn’t happen to others.
“I just want to make sure that anybody buying a new home has it in writing from their builder that if this does occur that they will be covered,” says Choquette.’
Both Arlene and her neighbour’s homes were built by Cardel; they say there were no issues with the siding while the home was under warranty and they cannot do anything about how the reflection comes off a window.
Choquettes only option is to ask her neighbour to replace the glass or hang a shade outside the window.
