MacEwan University upgrading emergency response system

WATCH ABOVE: MacEwan University is launching another aspect of its emergency notification system: texts and emails. Lisa Wolansky has the details.

EDMONTON — Students, faculty and staff at MacEwan University will soon be getting text messages and emails during emergencies.

The school will be testing out a mass notification system Feb. 26. The system will be used in case of emergencies like when there are threats to safety on campus or severe weather.

“It’s a system that will give us another channel of communication to inform students, faculty and staff about incidents in or around our campuses,” said Jim Ross, director of Risk and Assurance Services.

“Of course we hope we will never have to use it in response to a violent incident on campus but it will be there to use if needed.”

The school is encouraging all students, faculty and staff to provide updated contact information to the school. Anyone with a MacEwan email address is already signed up for the notification system.

The University of Alberta already has a mass notification system, but the school was criticized in 2012 for not sending a notification sooner after four armoured guards were shot inside the HUB mall.

The notification came out hours after the incident but it had already been on social media for sometime by then.

University officials said the school acted appropriately. A review was conducted and several changes to policy have since been made.
