TORONTO — A wardrobe malfunction caused Madonna to fall backwards off the stage at the Brit Awards in London on Wednesday night.

The 56-year-old singer was yanked down several stairs by her backup dancers after the Armani cape she was wearing failed to come off.

As she lay on the floor, dancers were able to remove the cape.

A screen grab of the moment Madonna was pulled backwards down a set of steps.

Madonna, who was singing “Living For Love” in the finale of the annual British music awards show, bravely picked herself up and finished the performance.

Fittingly, the song’s lyrics include: “Took me to heaven and let me fall down / Now that it’s over I’m gonna carry on / Lifted me up, and watched me stumble / After the heartache, I’m gonna carry on.”
