Edmonton sex assault suspect arrested in Australia, returned, released on bail

EDMONTON – A man accused in an Edmonton sexual assault was arrested in Australia and brought back to Canada after charges were laid against him.

Two Edmonton police officers went to Australia to bring back Nicholas Lemont, 24, to Edmonton on charges of sexually assaulting a woman in 2012.

On June 22, 2012, a man allegedly entered a home in the McCauley neighbourhood and sexually assaulted a 19-year-old woman. The woman was taken to hospital after officers arrived at the scene.

On Jan. 24, 2015, a Canada-wide warrant was issued for Lemont’s arrest. He was arrested in Cairns, Australia by Australian police. He was brought back to Canada by Edmonton police officers on Thursday, Feb. 12. He was released Tuesday on bail, with several conditions.

Lemont has been charged with:

  • Break and enter and commit assault with a weapon
  • Forcible confinement
  • Sexual assault with a weapon
  • Disguise with intent to commit an indictable offence
  • Possession of a weapon dangerous to the public

His next court appearance is scheduled for March 10.
