Shots fired in Regina pitbull attack

REGINA – A police officer fired his gun to scare off an attacking dog, while trying to arrest a break-and-enter suspect, early Saturday morning.

Around 3:00 a.m., police were called to a home near Retallack Street and 2nd Avenue, where police say three people were trying to break into a house.

Once on scene, a member of the canine unit and his police dog were confronted by what police describe as aggressive, off-leash pitbull.

After fighting with the dog, the officer took out his gun and shot a bullet into the ground, according to police. No one was injured in the incident.

Elijah Cardinal, 22, has been charged with breaching probation but the other two suspects fled.

Police are also warning the public the pitbull is still on the loose.

The incident will be review by the Regina Police Service Use of Force Review Board.
