Croatian Canadian heads to homeland seeking justice

Milan Vukelic came to Canada in 1976 with a dream to build a life for himself and his family in a new land.

Through hard work, he accomplished a lot in British Columbia, becoming a successful driller and blaster and raising a large family. But last year his life ended at the age of 61, when he went back to his homeland of Croatia for a short trip.

Milan’s parents had left him property next to his younger brother, and on that trip in September 2014, things turned tragic.

“Basically my uncle murdered my father,” charges his son Zeljko Vukelic, “Shot him 14 times out of jealousy and hate.”

The uncle, Mate Vukelic, is a recently retired police officer in the small village where he lived in Donji Kosinj. Mate was charged but released after 25 days in custody.

“He knows the judges there, he knows other judicial officials, police,” says Zeljko.

Despite what he says is corruption, Zeljko is fighting. He’s retained a lawyer in Croatia and he may be requested to go back any day for pre-trial proceedings.

“I feel like this is the only thing I have left that I can do for my dad is to fight for some sort of justice.”
