City debates use of drones in Saskatoon

Draganfly Innovations is looking for approval from the City of Saskatoon to fly drones over civic property. File / Global News

SASKATOON – Although some Saskatonians are concerned with the use of drones in the city, councillors aren’t completely opposed. Draganfly Innovations manufactures drones in Saskatoon and under Transport Canada regulations, approval must be obtained by landowners before one of the machines flies over.

The company wants the city’s approval to take off from city-owned properties so the drones could be used for industrial needs like inspecting infrastructure, along with search and rescue operations.

“We can’t just fly over somebody’s house unless we have authorization from the landowner nor would we do that,” said Zenon Dragan at Tuesday’s city transportation committee meeting.

The committee has asked administration for an internal report before making a decision.
