WINNIPEG — Curlers hit the ice on the Assiniboine River at the Forks Friday night to kick-off the Ironman Outdoor Curling Bonspiel.
72 teams signed up to play in the 14th annual bonspiel to raise funds for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba and to honour one man in particular.
“We want to prevent tragedies like we’re honouring Michael Wirth who passed away due to a heart disease at age 35,” bonspiel Director Michael Thompson said during the 6 p.m. kick-off match.
The entry fee for the tournament is $160, $100 of which goes towards the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The remaining $60 is to cover tournament expenses.

Curlers had fun with their team names coming up with creative names like Sweeping Beauties, Lords of the Rings and Bonspiel Jovi.
Friday night had three more draws after the 6 p.m. kick off. Games will run all day Saturday with playoffs on Sunday. The winner of the bonspiel gets a trophy, first choice at the prizes and “the glory that comes with being the Ironman champions” according to Thompson.
