KELOWNA – Okanagan families are being encouraged to take part in a Family Day ice skate that honours an Okanagan toddler while raising money for cancer research. The 2nd-annual princess and superhero skate is a tribute to 22-month-old Paige Moench. The little Kelowna girl died in August, 2013 from a rare and aggressive form of leukemia.
Feeling helpless, Paige’s parents, Natelle and Chris Moench, wanted to do something not only to keep their daughter’s memory alive but raise awareness about the lack of funding dedicated to researching children’s cancer.
“Generally only between one to four per cent of cancer research funding is delegated to kids cancer, ” says Natelle.
Last year’s fundraising skate brought out hundreds of people, many of them dressed up as superheros and princesses. Little Paige was a big princess fan. The event also raised about $4,500 towards pediatric cancer funding.
The skate takes place on BC Family Day, which is Monday, February 9, at Royal LePage Place in West Kelowna from 10 a.m. until noon. Entrance is by donation. Skate rentals are available on site.
The family has also started a foundation in Paige’s honour. Click here for more information on The Paige Foundation.
