Sask. volunteer rate highest amongst provinces

REGINA – When it comes to volunteering, Saskatchewan comes out on top.

According to a new Statistics Canada survey, our province had the highest rate in the country.

The survey finds 56 per cent of people in Saskatchewan volunteered their time in 2013, compared to 44 per cent nationally. Manitoba’s rate was second at 52 per cent.

The North Central Family Centre recently had to limit operations on the weekend because of a lack of funding. The centre’s executive director it relies on the community more than ever.

“A little bit of a balance, it’s always hard for a non profit,” said Sandy Wankel. “We’re so blessed to have so many agencies and employees who share their time and money with us.”

However, according to the survey, the total amount of hours people in Saskatchewan are donating is actually the lowest in the country. People appear more inclined to help at events over making a regular commitment.

“Peoples lives are very busy. I mean I look at so many of my colleagues and their shift work and commitments with families, so I understand that,” said Cindy Kuster Orban, University of Regina Coordinator.

Orban organizes for a group of nursing students to spent time at the North Central Family Centre each week.
